Jinan University,
established in 1906, is a comprehensive university under the joint
supervision and administration of the Overseas Chinese Affairs
Office of the State Council and the Ministry of Education. She
is one of China’s 100 top universities for the 21st century. Adhering
to the principle of "Oriented to students from overseas,
Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan", Jinan University, which comprises
the largest number of overseas students in China, has 23,752 full-time
students including 10,609 students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan,
and foreign countries.
Known as the Paramount Academy for Overseas Chinese, Jinan University
has always dedicated herself to the education of Chinese language
& culture, and pre-university for overseas students. The College
of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University was founded
in 1953 to offer programs of Chinese language & culture and
pre-university to overseas students. She was conferred as the
“National Base of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language” by the
Ministry of Education, and “Overseas Chinese Education Base” by
Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council. She is also
one of the ten key institutions that promote Chinese teaching
in neighboring countries under the guidance of The China National
Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. She has become
the biggest in scale and the greatest in strength in South China
for offering the programs of Chinese as a second or foreign language
and overseas Chinese education. The major of Teaching Chinese
as a Second or Foreign Language at the college was conferred the
title of “Famous Brand of Guangdong Province”. She is one of the
HSK (Chinese Proficiency Test) centers, and is also a training
and testing center for Certificate of TCFL (Teaching Chinese as
a Foreign Language) Ability. In addition, she is venue for the
National Entrance Examination of Chinese Universities for overseas
students and also the venue for the Joint Entrance Examination
of Jinan University and Huaqiao University for overseas students.
The College consists of 5 Departments, a research institutes
and two centers, with department of Teaching Chinese as a Second
or Foreign language, Department of Overseas Chinese, Department
of Applied Linguistics, Pre-University Department, Correspondence
Course Department, Overseas Chinese Education Institute, Research
Center for Overseas Huayu, and Modern Educational Technology Center.
Currently, there are 201 faculty and staff members in the College,
among whom there are 10 professors and 17 associate professors,
and 61 lecturers; 23 of the staff holding doctorate degrees, 55
master degrees holders and 14 supervisors for doctorate or master
candidates.
The College offers multiple forms of courses at various levels.
In this year, the enrolments was altogether 2053 students at different
levels, of which 132 were graduate students, 169 undergraduates
from mainland China, 829 pre-university students, 143 full-time
international undergraduates students for Chinese learning, 468
students on training courses, and 312 international students through
correspondence courses.
Located in Tianhe District, the new city center and cultural
center of Guangzhou, the College has easy access to metro and
intercity commuting systems. Lying at the foot of a hillside,
