LIMA -- Chinese cars are selling well in Peru with about 70 cars sold each month, Constantin Lerner, General Manager of importing company Zona Motors said Tuesday.

Chinese cars are selling well because they offer high technology at competitive prices, Lerner said.

The company is confident of achieving a market share of 2 percent to 3.5 percent this year. The first shipment of 150 Chinese cars arrived in November 2006, and about 95 percent were sold. A second shipment of 350 cars is on its way.

"Although our share in the Peruvian market is still small, in seven months of hard work we have beaten estimates," said Lerner.

Chinese cars have been sold for some time in Colombia, Uruguay and Venezuela and entered the Chilean market a month ago, Lerner said.

"Sales statistics show we are doing well. We have only been selling cars for eight months and we are competing with established brands from the United States, Europe, Japan and South Korea," Lerner said.

The Great Wall and Hafei brands are most popular in Peru, where Geely and Faw brand cars are also on sale, Lerner said.
